Oddball Baseball Rule of the Week: Interference

Rule 6.08 in the official rules of baseball deals with ways a batter is awarded first base without actually hitting the ball. Rule 6.08c deals with interference. It states:  The Batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put out when the catcher or any fielder interferes with him. If a play follows the interference, the manager of the offense may advise the plate umpire that he elects to decline the interference penalty and accept the play. Such election shall be made immediately at the end of the play. However, if the batter reaches first base on a hit, an error, a base on balls, a hit batsman, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one base, the play proceeds without reference to the interference.

This rule popped up in the Giants-Braves game the other night when Buster Posey was batting. Posey swung at a pitch and made contact with the glove of Braves catcher, Evan Gattis.  Intereference was called by the home plate umpire and Posey was awarded first base even though he'd been thrown out. However, his teammate Hunter Pence was at third base and came home on the play.  This is where the little known and seldom seen second part of Rule 6.08c was enacted by Giants manager Bruce Bochy.

Bochy chose to take the result of the play and have the run score and the out recorded than to have runners on first and third due to interference.

Oh, and because the result of the play was taken by Bruce Bochy, Buster Posey was credited with and RBI groundout on the play.

So, there you go folks.  I never knew that about the interference rule. It was also the first time I've ever seen a declined penalty in Major League Baseball.

Until next week folks, remember that you could see something that you'd never seen before when you watch a baseball game.

-The Commissioner
