Cool Baseball Term Of The Week: The Golden Sombrero

I used this term on Sunday morning while watching the Angels-Blue Jays game. My future wife asked me what is The Golden Sombrero?  So, I told her what it was, then she asked me where the term came from.  I was stumped.  Yes, the commissioner was stumped.  So, we did some research and  found what we believe is the answer. Here's what it is and where it came from.

Golden Sombrero- The Golden Sombrero is a term used for a player who has struck out four times in one game.  The term actually has its' roots in hockey.  In hockey, if you score three goals it's called a hat trick.  So, some baseball players in the early 1980s took the term and applied it to the stigma of striking out four times in a game.  It was also decided that a large hat would be used for the term. There aren't many hats bigger than sombreros and the term was born.  For example, A player who has gone 0 for 4 with 4 Ks has just earned the Golden Sombrero.  The first public usage of the term was believed to be in 1984 by Padres 1B/OF Carmelo Martinez as he spoke about a bad day at the plate by the Cubs Leon Durham.  Oh, and striking out five times in a game is called the Platinum Sombrero.

Until next week folks, remember that one week can make a big difference win the league.
- The Commisioner
