Funny Baseball Cards of the Week: 1989 Fleer #616- Billy Ripken, Old Judge Old Hoss Radbourn

25 years ago quite a stir was raised in the card collecting hobby when this Billy Ripken card started being pulled from wax packs....

This card looks innocent enough, but here's a close up of what's written on his bat handle....

Yes, it says "Fuck Face." How this card got past the proofreaders at Fleer we will never know.  It was the most famous baseball card of 1989.  However, this wasn't the first time anything like this ever happened to appear on a baseball card. In fact the earliest known example of this kind of thing occurring on a card happened way back in the late 1880s.

From 1887 to 1890 The Goodwin Company issued cards of hundreds of major and minor league baseball players, boxers, and wrestlers.  The cards were inserted in Old Judge cigarette packs. An amazing 4,500  types and variations of these cards exist. However one card is of value here. It's of the great Boston pitcher Old Hoss Radbourn...

Old Hoss was a irritable type of guy and he hated posing for pictures, so he gave the photographer  a salute.  Yup, Old Hoss flipped the bird. Here it is blown up too see...

It is easy to see here that ballplayers playing games with photographers goes back as far as ballplayers and photographers.

Until next week folks, remember that photos can generate far more than 1,000 words.
