Week 22
Hey All,
Labor Day Weekend is upon us and that means one thing; pennant race baseball! As the Majors Leagues prepare for their stretch run, so does the Longball League. As we can see, the San Pedro Sea Monkeys are still holding on to first place, but can they hold off the Mighty Mollusks and the hard-charging Tax Dodgers? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, the Thunder Mountain Lightning and the Invisible Hands remain within striking distance of first place.
Trivia: I pulled this one out of the Baseball Digest from an article on weird trades. In 1953, St. Louis Browns Owner Bill Veeck traded pitcher Virgil Trucks and third baseman Bob Elliott to the Chicago White Sox for two marginal players and 75,000 dollars. So, what was so weird about this trade? Veeck made the trade so he could use the money to pay off the mortgage on his home. Yeah, that's strange.
Baseball Card of the Week: In honor of that weird deal, I've chosen to honor Virgil Trucks by showing his 1952 Topps card. Oh, Trucks was a pretty good hurler too. He threw two no-hitters in the bigs.
