Week 21
Hey All,
Another summer has flown by, kids are going back to school and soon footballs will fill the air. However, there's still a little over a month to go in the regular season in the majors. That means the most exciting part of the season is coming. Ahh yes, the stretch run in the bigs should produce an exciting finish in the Longball League as well.
The San Pedro Sea Monkeys have been able to open a some breathing room at the top of the Longball League standings. This is due to two reasons. One, the Sea Monkeys got great production out of their lineup last week. Number two is the fact that Ryan Howard put up a big fat zero on the board this past week. However, all it takes is one bad week the other way and the standings could be completely upside down.
Trivia: With the young, speedy, Dexter Fowler setting a new Colorado Rockies club record for triples in one season this week with 17, I started wondering who is the oldest player to ever hit a three-bagger? The answer is Pete Rose. In 1986 at the age of 45, Rose slammed a pitch off San Francisco Giant pitcher, Greg Minton and raced around the bases for a triple. An interesting side note to this is that Rose's first hit in the bigs back in 1963 was a triple off Bob Friend of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Baseball Card of the Week: In honor of that triple back in 1986, here's a look at Pete's 1986 Topps card. Just in case you need an extra bit of trivia, the second oldest player to hit a triple at age 44 is Carlton Fisk. He did it 1991 for the Chicago White Sox.
Until next week folks, remember that the baseballs at Coors Field in Colorado are kept in a humidor so that they don't fly that far in the high altitude.
-The Commissioner
