Sad Baseball Stuff of the Week: The Death of Tony Gwynn

It's sad what chewing tobacco can do to a human body.  Cancer related to the use of smokeless tobacco is what caused the death of Tony Gwynn at age 54.  You'll be missed Tony.  Tony Gwynn was just about the best hitter I ever saw play in person.  One of the things I always thought about him was that he rarely struck out.  Here's some numbers I dug up on his rare Ks.

In a 20 season career, he struck out only 434 times.  That's a cool 21.4 times per season.  Heck, Josh Hamilton does that in a week!

He only struck out three times in a game once. The pitcher who got him was the recently deceased Bob Welch.

254 different pitchers struck out Tony Gwynn.  The pitcher who K'd Tony the most is Nolan Ryan.  The express fanned him nine times.

What an awesome hitter he was.  Rest in Peace Mr. Padre.  Here's a look at Tony from back in the Padres world series year of 1984.  This was his Mother's Cookies card...

Baseball Stuff of the Week that makes The Commissioner jealous: Clayton Kershaw's No-Hitter.

I'm not jealous that Kershaw threw the no-hitter.  I'm jealous the the owners of the  Swamp Possums and Rockford Peaches saw the game live.  Yup, Luci and Maureen happened to be at Dodger Stadium that night.  How very cool.

Until next week folks, remember that a strong bullpen wins championships.
