Week 3
Hey All!
It was a pretty wild week in the majors. Pittsburgh got trounced by Milwaukee 20-0, the Padres ran up an eight game win streak, and the Yankees turned a triple play. The Yankees hadn't turned a triple play since before I was born. Let's look at the Longball League standings.
The Thunder Mountain Lightning have vaulted into first place this week. The Dodgers' Matt Kemp had a big hand in the Lightning making it to the top. The San Pedro Sea Monkeys find themselves in second place for the first time in months, while Mo's Mollusks aren't too far out in third place. Meanwhile, the Invisible Hands and the Tax Dodgers are part of a bottlneck on the leader board.
Trivia: Most of us know that Sal Bando was Robert's favorite player growing up. He was a great infielder on those Oakland A's teams of the early 1970s. However, did any of you know that Sal Bando also pitched in the bigs? Sal Bando was one of three position players who pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers on 8-29-79. Brewer Manager George Bamberger had seen enough from his regular pitchers when his team was looking up at a 15-4 score in the third inning at Kansas City. Bando came in and pitched the next three innings for the brew crew. he gave up 2 runs in three innings work that day. 2B Jim Gantner and C Buck Martinez also pitched an inning a piece in this laugher of a game.
Baseball Card of the Week: I salute Sal Bando this week by showing his 1979 Topps card. Way to go and have the guts to pitch that day, Sal!
Until next week folks, remember it is possible to hit a ground rule home run at Tropicana Field.
-The Commissioner
